Hobbes Changes

This incarnation of hobbes is the first major move in over 7 years. It has been moved to a faster Linux server, and all of the web functionality has been rewritten in PHP with a MySQL back-end.

We encourage people to write archiver (at) hobbes (dot) nmsu (dot) edu with any questions or concerns. Before doing so, you may consider reading up on the more important changes to the Hobbes archive.

FTP Changes

New FTP Server

We have moved away from the old and insecure wuftpd to vsftpd. Because of this, we have had to make some concessions regarding user experience with the FTP server

No rename of files in /pub/incoming

On the old hobbes, people had the ability to anonymously rename files in /pub/incoming. This feature doesn't seem to exist in vsftpd, at least without enabling delete ability to /pub/incoming. We chose the "lesser evil" of disabling renames than allowing deletions. If you have any concerns with files in /pub/incoming, let the Archiver know.

No more 00index, 00global and 00files files

On the old hobbes, every directory in the FTP repository had 6 metafiles beginning in "00". These were used in aiding the web application. We have chosen to not generate these files. If you have a special need to get file descriptions via FTP, and have no access to HTTP, let the Archiver know and we can address it in a new way.

Web Application Changes

Subtle Aesthetic Changes

We have taken strides to making the transition to the new Hobbes web server as smooth as possible. Even so, we have made decisions based on aesthetics or W3C standards to change some of the HTML and Table formatting. If you have any specific suggestions for how to improve the interface, let us know!

File Download Path

Before, the root (/) of the web server was the same as that of the ftp server. This is not good security practice, so we have separated the two. So now, if you need to download a file from the web server, you can either click on the file name in the browse page, or type the path directly in the address bar, but prepend "download/" before the file path, like so:

http://hobbes2/download/pub/os2/apps/mmedia/sound/util/mp3wrap05.zip

What is the same?

We are striving to keep the core of the Hobbes experience the same as it has been for the last decade. The method of uploading, the text template, the method for archiving, etc. are all remaining the same. Your point of contact for all technical issues on hobbes is archiver (at) hobbes (dot) nmsu (dot) edu, as always.
